Our journey took us in South Island of New Zealand from North to South. The whole length of the trip was 900 km and we spent our Christmas on the road with lovely people we got to know in New Zealand. This Christmas I’ll definitely distinguish from all the other Christmases I’ve had, especially because it was on summer time. The road was mainly through the West Coast region of New Zealand, it is one of the more remote and most sparsely populated areas of the country. And Lonely Planet has named west coast road as end-of-the-road feel. I hope my photos are the evidence for that.

West Coast region is surrounded by Tasman Sea (which like the Southern Ocean can be very rough, with four-metre swells common) and by Southern Alps. Much of the land is rugged, with a coastal plain where much of the population resides. It has a very high rainfall due to the prevailing northwesterly wind pattern and the location of the Southern Alps, which give rise to rain. It is one of the most rainiest areas in New Zealand and we we’re so lucky to have a beautiful weather. Architecture this side of the country is like from the westerns, this is because of the gold rush time in New Zealand in the 19th century. And you could even dig your own gold in Cromwell, this city was our destination and at the moment we are staying here. But not for long anymore.

What were we doing here in Cromwell? After the gold rush Cromwell started to make business with stonefruits, so this is their gold nowadays. Here are a lot of fruit orchards that grow apricots, nectarines and cherries. We have been here already one month and we picked cherries. It isn’t a dream job, but I still love every day here. Beauty of Southern Alps around us compensates all the hard times. For us cherry season just ended and we will move on. Cromwell is at the moment full of backpackers who are all enjoying the free spirited life. We are living together with people from all over the world and our kitchen is fulfilled every evening with the tastes of the world (just for example that one evening I learnt how to do Chilean, Taiwanese and French meals). I already have gotten great recipes which are waiting to writing. Can’t wait to share them with you one day!

Tervitused!
